For Poetry Monday, another cat poem from Le Guin:

Black Leonard in Negative Space, Ursula K. Le Guin

All that surrounds the cat
is not the cat, is all
that is not the cat, is all,
is everything, except the animal.
It will rejoin without a seam
when he is dead. To know
that no-space is to know
what he does not, that time
is space for love and pain.
He does not need to know it.

This has been a Yuletide of abundance — five gifts in three fandoms, including a surprising amount of poetry. My matched gift was appropriately titled:
Gifts (1212 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Flower Fairies - Cicely Mary Barker
Additional Tags: Fae & Fairies, Bargains With Fae & Fairies, Unwise bargains With Fae & Fairies, Becoming a real boy, or otherwise - Freeform
Summary: Humans, give a little something. Give me something, get a present. Humans, give me, just a small gift —
A fae of dubious credibility asks the human models of several flowers (in alphabetical order) each for a gift, just a little thing, to help it become real. The tag “unwise bargains with fae & fairies” is accurate. Beautiful, seductive, and more than a little dangerous.

I also got a Flower Fairy treat, in this case a poem:
Flower Fairies of the Gone Woods (193 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Flower Fairies - Cicely Mary Barker
Additional Tags: Fae & Fairies, Botanical accuracy, Biographical liberties, Poetry
Summary: The berries are not to be eaten
She says in a marginal note
Miss Barker, she asked you to listen
So what’s that bright thing in your throat?
Homage and critique, with a nice sting in the end.

Then I got two treats for another fandom, again a poem and a story. The poem is amazing, giving backstory using the stanza of the original:
The Vigil (1056 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came - Robert Browning, Original Work
Characters: Childe Roland, Cuthbert, Giles
Additional Tags: Original Character(s), Backstory, Blank Verse, Time Loop
Summary: Upon this quest, there can be no release.
Unto that hallowed tower we must go...
I flail.
Three Knigths by the Dark Tower (2104 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came - Robert Browning
Relationships: roland/cuthbert, Cuthbert & Giles, Roland & Cuthbert & Giles
Characters: Roland (Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came), Cuthbert (Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came), Giles (Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came)
Summary: Giles and Cuthbert follow their friend Roland even to the threshold of the Dark Tower, hoping to help him on his quest.
Cuthbert and Giles have not in fact departed from the quest, as Roland (at the end of his rope) had thought.

And finally, a treat on the Housman poem “Her strong enchantments failing,” being a poem cycle expanding a bit on the backstory and worldbuilding:
ILLUC VOLAT (278 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Her Strong Enchantments Failing - A. E. Housman
Additional Tags: Poetry, Inspired by Poetry
Summary: A series of poems inspired by “Her strong enchantments failing” by A.E. Housman, which re-tell the story of that poem in a new way.
Yessssssss.

Mastodon brought me here.

After seeing a post on Mastodon, I decided to start a new blog here. I liked the idea of an old-fashioned interface, but the clincher was the lack of algorithmic optimisation on the platform. I miss the idea of short to mid-form snippets, and of connecting with communities built through interest and cooperation rather than desire and competition.

Christmas here was calm and sober-ish. Today, I opted out of the post-Christmas chaos in town to continue work on a small project I am developing, a decision architecture that bakes in refusal instead of pushing optimisation or smoothness.

I took a short walk around the neighbourhood and was nearly blinded by the winter sun after being holed up in my cosy chrimbo warren. I had to run a few errands, contact lens solution, fruit, etc., and I have noticed that I have hit a plateau with my French learning. I am a solid B1, which is enough to survive comfortably, but not enough to express myself with fluidity and ease.

The words come out easily enough now, but like a fatigued and inexperienced gymnast, they often land in a kerfuffle or contortion, or just plonk. So, grammar books dusted off, Duolingo back in the core rotation.

Happy Yuletide!

The holidays have been calm and quiet for me so far, but I've spent them with my mum, so somehow almost all the time was filled up anyway. *g* Tonight I finally found the time to properly settle down with my Yuletide gifts! I got three of them, two in the main collection and one in Madness. ♥ ♥ ♥

Here they are:
  • Nicky and Gwarha from Ring of Swords, completely spot on, in an episode mentioned but not described in detail in canon:
    Veni, Vidi, Arrivederci (1516 words)
Fandom: Ring of Swords - Eleanor Arnason
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Relationship: Ettin Gwarha/Sanders Nicholas
    Content Tag: Pre-Canon

Summary: The purple jungle adventure, from Gwarha's point of view.

  • The Nantucket Trilogy, a few generations later - future history my beloved:
Portraits of the Past (1371 words)
Fandom: Nantucket Trilogy - S.M. Stirling
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Relationships: Kenneth Hollard/Raupasha, Kashtiliash/Kathryn Hollard
Characters: Raupasha (Nantucket Series), Kashtiliash (Nantucket Series), Original Characters
Content Tags: Post canon, Canon as Seen Through The Lens of History

Summary: A new exhibit opens at the Athenaeum...

  • More Nantucket Trilogy - a Raupasha drabble about her arrival on Nantucket:
    Her New Future (100 words)
Fandom: Nantucket Trilogy - S.M. Stirling
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Relationship: Kenneth Hollard/Raupasha
Characters: Raupasha (Nantucket Series), Kenneth Hollard
Content Tags: Yuletide Madness Drabble Invitational, YUMADRIN 2025, Drabble, Post-Canon

Summary: Raupasha reflects on the future.

I'm so pleased! So far I'm having a fantastic Yuletide. :D

Now I'm looking forward to diving into the rest of the collection! How's everyone else's Yuletide so far?

Wishing you and yours a peaceful season and a lovely holiday ♥

"put a little holiday in your heart
it'll put a little shuffle in your step
give you a song that you can sing
with a melody you can't forget

and if you want to join in a little harmony
to keep the world from tearing apart
you know where to look
you gotta put a little holiday in your heart"

My second [community profile] ficinabox story! This one is Grimm, because how could I resist when someone (*cough* [personal profile] miss_ingno *cough*) requests my tiny OT3? :D

The prompt was, "canon divergence where Juliette copes better with her transformation into a Hexenbiest" - and when I thought about where to branch off and rewatched some episodes, I realised I could start right at the beginning, with her very first woge. Derail it all before it gains any ground! No secrecy to come between Nick and Juliette, no losing control, no shocking reveal in the aftermath of violence ... and if Nick was there for her first woge, she'd see his Grimm eyes, too!

Of course Nick still has issues, and Juliette is still struggling - but that's where Renard comes in, because when the two of them turn to him together, magic happens. *g*

(And so much happens in that one night that I managed to derail some other plot as well, just from having Juliette woge in front of everyone! I had so much fun with that. :D)

Farewell to the Monsters (10,183 words)
Fandom: Grimm (TV)
Rating: Mature
Relationship: Nick Burkhardt/Sean Renard/Juliette Silverton
Characters: Juliette Silverton, Nick Burkhardt, Sean Renard, Rosalee Calvert, Monroe, Hank Griffin
Content Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Episode Related, s04e08 Chupacabra, Hexenbiest reveal, Hexenbiest Psychology, Hexenbiest Sexuality, UST, Developing Relationship

Summary:

Juliette almost wished Nick didn't know what was happening to her. She could quietly deal with it on her own, get rid of it, go back to normal before anyone found out.

That would have been so much easier. Instead, she'd woged in front of everyone. And there was no turning back.

Fic in a Box

Or, perhaps, Vid in a Box on the creation part. I took on 12k of assignment and 2k of pinch hit, and ended up with a touch of overkill. Only a bit over 1k of wordcount, but 15k of wordcount + equivelent.

I made two vids, both for Side Story of Fox Volant:
My Loss – Nan Lan/Miao Renfeng, but it's Nan Lan choosing divorce
Sister Moon – Yuan Ziyi has principles and she will not abandon them for anyone, Hu Fei included

I wrote one fic for SWTOR, this time T-rated (??? I know, I know, what is this, my lesbians are neither fucking nor covered in gore, what has the world come to, etc):
Horizons Deep – Darth Nox/Empress Acina pre-femslash, idk Nox is having a Sithly midlife crisis I guess

and I made one fanmix for The Expanse:
Write the History – Laconia. Shall gather into an actual YouTube playlist in January when I'm on desktop again.

In exchange, I received two things! One incredibly fun romp for SWTOR, where the Inquisitor and Talos Drellik crash somewhere and, well, Talos gets one hell of a story to tell:
Temporarily Stranded, by [archiveofourown.org profile] Gammarad

and a long and very canon-typical adventure for The Apothecary Diaries, where Empress Gyokuyou summons Maomao to solve a puzzle posed to her by a foreign envoy:
treasures from the blue north, by [archiveofourown.org profile] discokonomi

For Leonard, Darko, and Burton Watson, Ursula K. Le Guin

A black and white cat
on May grass waves his tail, suns his belly
among wallflowers.
I am reading a Chinese poet
called The Old Man Who Does As He Pleases.
The cat is aware of the writing
of swallows
on the white sky.
We are both old and doing what pleases us
in the garden. Now I am writing
and the cat
is sleeping.
Whose poem is this?

Happy Solstice!

This sure has been a year. I adopted two new gardens, finished [community profile] inkingitout and novel-writing month, and bought both a car and a dog sled.

The dog sled is a kit that's supposed to double as a kicksled; it should arrive in a couple of weeks. (Daphne will not be pulling it. If I'm lucky she'll ride for a bit.) I just learned about kicksledding ::checks:: yesterday, so. As per usual.

Relatedly, I heard the following fun bilingualism today:

“我已经try very hard to 给我自己花钱。” ("I already try very hard to spend money on myself.")

Currently in legos I'm building a waterfall, which the box tells me will light up and move when I'm done. Despite my decades of STEM employment, my engineering experience is largely limited to assembling furniture and garden equipment. I suppose success or failure will determine whether this part of the jianghu becomes Cloud Recesses or Lotus Pier.

I found the velociraptors, by the way. And the dolphins! The dolphins are now frolicking at the foot of Baoshan Sanren's mountain. (I've already forgotten what I did with the velociraptors. They might be in the garden.) (ETA: They are in the chicken coop.)

The sky was very beautiful today.

[community profile] ficinabox author reveals have happened! And here is the first of the two stories I wrote.

I wanted to write something set in the later episodes, and [personal profile] gavilan had asked for smut, so I was brainstorming and rewatching things to find a suitable spot to make it happen. And in episode 31, during the Nightmare Master arc, there's this moment when Shen Wei, chained to the Sky Pillar in Dixing, can feel Zhao Yunlan's energies in turmoil even though Zhao Yunlan is far away in Haixing. So I thought, what if ...? I'd always meant to do something with the Nightmare Master's power anyway, because dream manipulation has so much potential! Also [personal profile] gavilan said they like angst, and what is angstier than the whole white energy plan? So I had an opportunity for canon divergence with larger impact ... *g*

With many thanks to [personal profile] china_shop, as usual, for beta-reading. ♥

To Make a Dream (9270 words)
Fandom: 镇魂 | Guardian (TV 2018)
Rating: Mature
Relationship: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan

Content Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Episode Related, Episode 31, Nightmare Master arc, Dream Sharing, Dixing Powers, Black and White Energy, First Kiss, First Time, Pre-Fix-It

Summary:

"You took a while to wake," Shen Wei said gently. "I brought you home." He ran a hand through his hair. "I needed rest, too."

So that was the fantasy: something Zhao Yunlan could almost, almost believe. His heart clenched. Suddenly he understood Zhu Hong's temptation to keep dreaming. But the true Shen Wei was still missing. Zhao Yunlan needed to wake up for real.

Fic in a Box - my gifts!

I received three fantastic gifts for [community profile] ficinabox - what a bounty! Time got away from me; I've been meaning share this this sooner, but here they finally are:
  1. A wonderful Grimm fic where everyone comes together to shape the future of the Wesen world - I really wish the show had gone in a direction like this, instead of insisting the Wesen world had to keep hidden:
Clock Strikes Midnight (4204 words) [Teen]
    Fandom: Grimm (TV)
    Relationship: Nick Burkhardt/Sean Renard/Juliette Silverton
Characters: Nick Burkhardt, Sean Renard, Juliette Silverton, Rosalee Calvert, Alexander
Content Tags: background Rosalee Calvert/Monroe, Wesen & Grimm & Royals Politics, Plans to make the Wesen world go public, Politics, Worldbuilding, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Voice of Reason Rosalee Calvert

Summary: "Revelation is inevitable. Sooner or later, we will be found out and our secrets dragged out of the shadows and into the light."

At a potluck picnic in the park, Portland's Wesen gather to decide their future—and that of the world.
  2. A delightful Grimm fic in an unconventional format - this one's from a Wesen textbook! I'm so fascinated with all the bits and pieces of history we got over the course of the show, and I love getting more of that!
A Historical Perspective on the Gesetzbuch Ehrenkodex (6082 words) [Teen]
    Fandom: Grimm (TV)
Content Tags: Wesen & Grimm & Royals Politics, In-Universe Textbook, Pre-Canon, In-Universe Documents

Summary: Being the introduction to a textbook on the history of a complex time in the wesen world.
  3. And an amazing gift in a Yuletide-rare fandom where two characters I've been wanting more interaction for get to have a great missing scene together that I wish had happened just like this in canon:
A Private Audience (1265 words) [Teen]
Fandom: Nantucket Trilogy - S.M. Stirling
Relationships: Kashtiliash/Kathryn Hollard, Raupasha & Kashtiliash, Raupasha/Kenneth Hollard
    Characters: Kashtiliash, Raupasha, Kathryn Hollard
Content Tags: Missing Scene, Not Canon Incompliant, Uptimers vs Downtimers, Hollard Family Tropism for Royalty

Summary: Raupasha seeks Kashtiliash's permission this time...

I have no idea where December went! On the one hand, yay, I'm done with work now for this year! On the other, what do you mean, Yuletide reveals are in a few days?! *flails*

So before that happens, a catch-up update!
  • Time keeps slipping; I ended up putting a santa hat on my default icon a week late, and my Christmas decorations are still very partial. It's one of those years ...

  • [community profile] ficinabox had multiple delays and ate into the Yuletide period more than I'd expected, after [community profile] rarepairexchange had already had more delays than expected, eating into the [community profile] ficinabox period. (Because I really am constitutionally incapable of letting a story go until it's gone live, I will keep working on it and often expanding it ...) So I probably should try and stick mostly to exchanges with a fixed reveals date next year - if those have delays, they tend to be small ones.

  • I got a whole bounty of gifts for [community profile] ficinabox - I'll post about that separately - and I wrote two stories myself! I don't think I'm terribly anonymous; it's fairly easy to tell which are mine. But I'll talk about that after author reveals. *g*

  • Right now I'm working on Yuletide, being chased by BEARS - I'm editing and (yes) expanding my assignment, and fiddling with a treat. I'm really having fun with my assignment! But fighting a bit with the narrative voice; I may end up making changes there after all.

  • Over at [community profile] sid_guardian, our slo-mo rewatch (half an episode per week) is going strong! We're having fantastic discussions every week, and it's so much fun. And we're only at episode 8 (taxi scene and Zhao Yunlan's disaster flat coming up this weekend!), so we're going to be at this for some time. :D

  • Recently I've been making spinach eggdrop soup, which is delicious! It's mainly this recipe, though I've made a few changes. (I boil the broth for 10 minutes with chopped ginger and scallion, which makes it super flavourful, then add the cornstarch, then the eggs. And I don't bother with blanching the spinach - I just dump it straight into the soup after the eggs are in. Also works with frozen!)

  • How's everyone else doing? *sprays BEAR repellent all around*

Meanwhile, in the annals of contemporary linguistics, I’ve become fascinated with the adverbial use by certain Gen-Alphas of low-key. It also has the same adjectival uses that have been around for a while, but when used as an adverb, it’s a mild intensifier, roughly comparable to rather, so slightly stronger than kinda but weaker than very. (I’ve heard someone use kinda then correct themselves to low-key to strengthen the statement.)

What’s fascinating, though, is that it almost always modifies negative attributes — bad, tired, hungry, bored. The main exceptions I’ve heard are negations of negative attributes, so both “low-key hungry” and “low-key not hungry.” Both forms, ofc, include negations, which might be why both are acceptable?

This is even more interesting than how derogatory mid is — it doesn’t mean “middling” quality, like it first sounded, but thoroughly mediocre. And yes, something can be low-key mid.

Ballet Experiences

Dec. 17th, 2025 03:56 pm
extrapenguin: Northern lights in blue and purple above black horizon. (Default)
[personal profile] extrapenguin
In an effort to actually get some wear out of my formalwear, I have decided to take up going to the ballet. Here are the first two.

Carmina Burana (Paris Ballet Theater, Choir & Orchestra of Budapest)
I caught a matinee (16:00) at the Palais de Congrès and was basically the only person who was dressed up at all :'D Ah well. (Achivement unlocked: overdressed at the opera ballet in Paris.)

I reserved the tickets knowing absolutely nothing about what I was getting into, beyond "high culture", so I the fact that it was a ballet was a, uh, surprise.

Anyway. I loved it! There were basically two prima ballerina roles, and the music was great. More ballet should have a choir on stage. The, idk, multimediality? of having a soloist singer sing an aria while the dancers danced a pas de deux or variation was cool. All the drama was on point. I think this is a good production, and they're touring in the rest of France + neighboring regions, so if you can, I rec going!

I also bought the programme and basically everyone named, from production to roles, is from East of the Iron Curtain. (The one exception, The Temptress, is from Italy.) It's noticeable in how the style of dance is much more Vaganova/Russian school, with open shoulders and an engaged back. The same corps is putting on a Swan Lake in March/April that I will catch.

Notre Dame de Paris (Paris Opera Ballet)
This one was at the Opéra Bastille, and people did dress up! (Not all tho; I spotted several people in jeans and t-shirts, puffer coats, or sweatpants. Also a random old lady told me I was truly magnificent.) Sartorial observations below.

This ballet didn't end up working for me. Some of it was synchronization issues (several in the corps de ballet, but also one in a pas de deux between Esmeralda and Quasimodo), some of it was the costuming (all the women were in microskirts and the styling made them look at most 15), but mostly it was I think the fact that it's a French production.

You see, the French style of ballet is all about clean lines, exact positions, control, #chic, #cleangirl. It is fundamentally incapable of adapting Notre Dame because it is fundamentally incapable of depicting horniness. Phoebus and Esmeralda both lost their shirts during a pas de deux and it was not horny, Frollo was just an evil sorcerer who had a stick up his ass in an unhorny way, the prostitutes were unhorny and so was Phoebus dancing with them. I have seen hornier Swan Lakes. Everyone needed to go on a vision quest to find their inner Odile. The Quasimodo & Esmeralda worked, because that's based on innocent sentiment, but the Phoebus/Esmeralda and Frollo -> Esmeralda didn't come across properly at all. Also Frollo came across as sympathetic (99% sure unintentionally) because there's something just that pathetic about having a dude solo dance one half of a pas de deux while two people are dancing the actual pas de deux.

Esmeralda, in a microskirt, being not at all seductive.

However, this does choreographically give the entire corps de ballet (in fact, everyone but Phoebus) some movement stuff to do that's usually reserved for jesters, so this is the production to put on when your corps de ballet has jester envy.

Not super impressed with the company, but I guess I'll catch at least Romeo and Juliet in Apr/May before giving up. Also kinda want to see La Bayadère in Jun/Jul because I've never seen that before.

anthropological observations on clothing
The average Frenchwoman is rail thin, but more of a pear/spoon type – not much beneath, but even less up top, if you will. As such, the "dressy" clothing seems to be elevated pant + elevated shirt + nice scarf. Any dresses are cut incredibly straight in the skirt, at max a very drapey A-line. The goal is to look ~effortlessly put together~, i.e. spend an hour of effort to look like you simply pulled out the first two items from your elegant, curated closet and put them on without thought.

(The person sitting next to me was wearing an actual nice dress with a pleated skirt. Then her similarly dressed friend turned up and turns out they're Russian.)

(By French standards, I am tallish with a broad ribcage. I also objectively have broad shoulders, and an amazingly athletic butt and thighs. There is no way I am able to give the same vibes as the locals lol. Anything I wear will look more playful, intentional, and/or dramatic.)
