EN-中文 bilingual museum materials

Just in case you enjoy bilingual signs and materials as much as I do, here are some from the Peabody Essex Museum's Lunar New Year event yesterday ♥

Boston Chinatown paifang gate - pictures and translation notes

With lunar new year activities still ongoing, I finally looked up the significance of the writing on the Boston Chinatown gate ♥

(What I learned is that many more hours of study will be required to understand the significance. I included notes from my initial googling below for anyone who's interested.)

gate pictures, front and back )

天下为公
(in traditional characters on the gate, right to left: 公為下天)
Translated in a variety of ways including "everything under heaven is for the public" and "the world is shared equally by all."
unverified google research )

礼义廉耻
(in traditional characters on the gate, right to left: 恥廉義禮)
Four principles necessary to a functioning society: "propriety, justice, integrity, honor" or "etiquette, righteousness, honesty, sense of shame."

Not a fluffy story, but I really enjoyed former dragon Wei Wuxian becoming the snake king of the demons completely by accident and just... never correcting them. Lan Wangji's arrival causes zero moral dilemmas for either of them, which I found both touching and refreshing. And I'm no skilled judge of Chinese erotica, but I thought the author did justice to their stated goal: "我要让全世界知道龙性恋的好。"

Nice things #5: What good things happened in March?

♥ 第五个感恩的问题:这个三月发生了哪些好事情?(好天气、有趣的体验、这个月终于结束了、等等?)

我这个月听说了另一件事,好像和感恩的主题有关:“国外的月亮比较圆。” (Allen, 在这个视频中:Taiwanese Talks About Starting a Business in Thailand。Eileen的翻译是,"the moon is rounder abroad.")

Word game #3: 分享成语,share a chengyu

So I've spent a probably unreasonable amount of time thinking about how to modify the game "word dragon" so that people can play it individually AND in a group (not that group games aren't great, just that it's fun to have both options) and I'm temporarily conceding defeat.

Instead, I propose "share a chengyu" day!* Since it's the year of the loong, here are two great options:

1) Comment with a chengyu that includes 龙/龍/🐲/loong/dragons. (Feel free to include the meaning or just the chengyu itself.)

OR

2) Comment with any chengyu you like! It's like the "ticky box" option on a poll ♥ Favorite chengyu, one you heard or used recently, whatever springs to mind.

*Inspired by how great the Pleco app is: it not only provides contextual examples for word use, it also provides chengyu involving particular characters (if you look up the character and then click "words" for sample words, chengyu including that character will be included on the list).

Word game #2: mix and match good wishes!

新年好,春节快乐,今天是大年初一!Happy year of the dragon, or year of the loong! *

This next game was going to be a matching game, involving common 4-character phrases used to wish people good luck and good health, where you connect the first half of the phrase to the second. But as with so many forms of expression, there aren't really any wrong answers, just less common ones!

So instead of one-to-one matching, I made it into a poll, so you can select as many matches as you want ♥

*The following fun article gives a nice summary of the dragon/loong history and discourse, and includes what [personal profile] marcicat calls "words of wisdom for the year ahead" when it quotes Christina Huang's appreciation of the word "loong" as a design element: "You can always add more Os!"

龙年大吉, wishing you lots of luck in the year of the dragon

除夕快乐,Happy New Year's Eve!

It's the last day of the year of the rabbit, or already the year of the dragon depending on when you read this! Here is a friendly word jumble to start the celebration off right:

你 乐 新 快 祝 年

Assemble the six characters in order to form a common wish this time of year ♥

Alternatively or in addition, feel free to share a word, phrase, or sentence with 兔 (thanks, rabbit!) or 龙 (welcome, dragon!) in it.

Resources and Recs #5

Hooray! Thanks to everyone for being here for a whole month of writing prompts and polls! I had fun with them, and I hope you did too ♥

In February I'll post some word games in honor of Lunar New Year (the connection being largely "things that are fun"). The games themselves will rely on Chinese characters, words or sentences, but the explanations will be in English. Please feel free to write something instead of or in addition to playing.

Also feel free to share any recommendations you have from the week! I wanted to rec Chinese-forums as a resource last week, but they were in the middle of a server change. They're back now, and a fun source of camaraderie, opinions, and experience.

Someone at Chinese-forums also recommended Lingotrack recently, and I've started using it to log some of my language study. (It makes pretty graphs!) It's easier than I expected, and it's very much about individual user experience: the answer to "how should I describe or categorize [a particular] activity?" is generally "however you want!"

Thanks again for a great January, friends. I appreciate you, and I hope your 2024 is off to a fantastic start.

。。。我想了想这个问题,不知道怎么回答。所以我加别的问题:兔年有什么你想记得或者继续明年吗?
